Over the last 120 years, Bechtel has grown to become one of the most respected global engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies in the world.

Since 1898, we have been the trusted partner of industry and governments worldwide, helping them deliver more than 25,000 projects in 160 countries on all seven continents. We are proud of what we've delivered. From the Hoover Dam in the 1930s to the Sydney Metro today, our customers’ projects have — and continue — to create industry and economies; improve access to energy and resources; connect citizens to vital services; make the world a safer and cleaner place; and deliver innovation for years to come. Quite simply, they have changed the face of the world.

Today, our company is led by the fifth generation of Bechtel leadership, Brendan Bechtel. Following the vision and values set forth from our company's beginning, we continue to partner with our customers, communities and the industry to deliver the extraordinary, with a specific emphasis on sustainability and innovation

Sustainability

While Bechtel has deployed practices to protect the environment, start small businesses, and empower local communities for decades, we wanted to create specific goals around four areas where we knew the company’s experience, technologies, relationships, and core competencies could make a sizable impact. These include supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals; advancing sustainability in project development and delivery; strengthening the resilience of communities; and leveraging supplier engagements to catalyze sustainable opportunities further.

For example, to help increase the resilience of vulnerable communities, we recently partnered with IBM in Puerto Rico to assess the school system’s disaster resilience in the wake of the unprecedented damage caused by Hurricane Maria. We are also working with Conservation International to improve resiliency in the Philippines by applying an innovative approach that combines “green” (nature) and “gray” (civil engineering) design. We plan to deploy these solutions at two pilot sites on Iloilo island.

We will have contributed 10 ideas by the end of this year to address global goals around energy, infrastructure, water, and worker welfare, with a commitment of delivering 100 ideas by 2030.

Innovation

Innovation is critical to our customer's long-term success. We are partnering with them, as well as industry and academia to encourage new ideas, implement new technologies, use data and artificial intelligence to improve safety and quality, revolutionize how we work, and inspire the next generation of engineers.

Recent partnerships include:

  • Sponsoring Dream Big: Engineering our World, an award-winning IMAX® movie celebrating the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small that was seen by millions around the world.
  • Teaming with the NHEO Institute to advance innovative safety practices and engagement of craft professionals on construction sites.
  • Collaborating with Station Houston to connect startups in the Houston, Texas area with industry experts. The partnership focuses on enhancing opportunities for local entrepreneurs through mentoring and engagement in solving EPC industry challenges.
