Congratulating Rail Link Engineering (RLE), the consortium responsible for managing delivery of HS1, for its achievements, Rail Minister Tom Harris said:
“This landmark project is a demonstration of how passengers can benefit from a combination of Government investment and private sector delivery. I congratulate all those who have been involved in successfully constructing this magnificent new railway on time and within budget.”
John Armitt CBE, Chair of the Olympic Delivery Authority who spoke today at an RLE event, said:
“High Speed 1 is a remarkable engineering achievement and a testament to the skills and dedication of all the teams involved. As this landmark project approaches its final run in, it offers an inspiring example of the construction industry’s ability to deliver large, complex projects on time and within budget.”
Constructed at a cost of £5.8 billion, HS1 is the first mainline railway built in Britain since the Great Central steamed into Marylebone in 1899. As this new high-speed rail link from the Channel Tunnel to London heads towards completion, the full scale of what has been achieved is now very much in focus.
Rail Link Engineering (RLE) a consortium of Arup, Bechtel, Halcrow and Systra has been responsible for the design and project management of HS1. Working on behalf of London Continental Railways, RLE represents the very best in engineering excellence.
RLE has demonstrated that with good partnering, the right skills and a committed workforce, the construction industry can deliver large, complex infrastructure projects. The project team has achieved this while at the same time setting new standards in safety, efficiency, environmental protection and community relations.
