Terrence E. (Ed) Richardson, a former senior vice president and distinguished engineer with Bechtel, has received one of the highest honors given by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE): the Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Lifetime Achievement Award in construction. The award is given for innovation and excellence in the construction of civil engineering projects and/or programs.
Richardson joined Bechtel in 1977 as a senior engineer for the company’s Power business unit and eventually rose to the position of senior vice president and corporate manager of Engineering. He led Bechtel’s community of engineers, with responsibilities to develop technical and management talent; improve work processes, standards, and best practices; and nurture technical innovation. In 2001, Richardson and his team embarked on a strategic plan to enhance Bechtel’s engineering services, which are recognized as being among the best in the industry. Some of his other notable accomplishments include overseeing nuclear and fossil power projects in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States; as well as leading Bechtel’s civil business unit and Bechtel Infrastructure Corporation (BINFRA) before retiring in 2006.
Before joining Bechtel, Richardson served as a nuclear officer in the U.S. Navy’s submarine force. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, and graduate degrees in business and engineering from George Washington University and California Polytechnic Institute. He is a registered engineer in 16 U.S. states as well as the District of Columbia.
