More than 200 Bechtel construction workers were honored during an event to celebrate construction of the Russell City Energy Center (RCEC) in Hayward, California. Bechtel is the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for the 620-megawatt, combined-cycle facility. The celebration was hosted by the project’s owners, Calpine Corporation and GE Energy Financial Services, and included state and local leaders.
“Wherever we work, our goal is to make a positive contribution in the community and Russell City is no exception,” said Alasdair Cathcart, president of Bechtel’s power business. “We are pleased to be working with Calpine and GE to bring jobs and reliable, cleaner energy to the Bay Area.”
During the celebration, Russell City Energy Center presented a check for $10 million to the City of Hayward for design and construction of a new library. Read the release.
When complete, RCEC will be part of a new generation of clean power generation facilities that utilize state-of-the-art emissions control equipment. It will be up to 40% more efficient than comparable older technology power plants operating today and will help California meet its demand for clean energy. The project is scheduled to be finished in 2013.
Bechtel is a global leader in designing and building combined cycle facilities as evidenced by more than 50-years of experience of successfully delivering combined-cycle plants in the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, China, and the Middle East.
