“Each of the new Fellows personifies Bechtel’s pursuit of technical excellence, high standards, and accomplishment,” said Bechtel Chairman and CEO Riley Bechtel. “They join our 18 active Fellows, all of whom are recognized experts in their fields.”
Bechtel Fellows advise senior management on questions related to their areas of expertise, participate in strategic planning, and help disseminate new technical ideas and findings throughout the organization. They help keep Bechtel at the forefront of technical innovation by enhancing the company’s technical capability and reputation. Fellows make significant contributions to professional societies, code committees, advisory councils, and international conferences—and to Bechtel’s customers.
The new Bechtel Fellows are:Craig Myler, an internationally recognized expert in the disposal of ultra-hazardous waste and chemical weapons, has served as a U.S. delegate to chemical weapons demilitarization conferences in Japan, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Scotland, Belgium, and Switzerland. His research and development work includes presentations and patents for treatment of chemical or conventional munitions using acid digestion and for rapid filtration of air to protect against chemical, nuclear, and biological attack. At Bechtel, he has played a pivotal role in the company’s chemical demilitarization work for the U.S. government.
Myler has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He has presented at conferences in the United States, the Netherlands, and Russia on the disposal of chemical weapons.
Lee Schmoe, a world-class authority in gasification and integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) technology, has been a leading advocate of gasification and IGCC since 1980 – both at Bechtel and within the industry. Over the course of his career, he has provided technical and management oversight on dozens of gasification studies, project development efforts, and front-end engineering designs. Schmoe helped put together the Bechtel & GE IGCC Alliance and is on the alliance management team.
Schmoe has a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Rice University, and has authored and co-authored more than two dozen technical papers and presented at workshops around the world. He has been Bechtel’s representative to the Gasification Technologies Council since 1990 and on its executive committee.
Justin Zachary is one of the foremost specialists in turbo machinery, with special expertise in gas turbine performance, combustion, and emissions. In a career spanning more than three decades, Zachary worked for Siemens, General Electric, and Rolls Royce, before moving to Bechtel in 1999. While at GE, he developed cutting-edge simulation software for the performance of the largest and most powerful jet engine of its time. Zachary currently provides technical support in the area of renewables such as waste heat, concentrated thermal solar, CO2 capture, and biomass combustion. He was a member of the proposal team that won the recent EPC contract for the BrightSource Energy thermal solar project in California.
Zachary is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and is an active participant in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), helping it earn national and international recognition for innovative changes to performance test codes. He has a Ph.D. in thermodynamics and heat cycles from Western University in Alberta, Canada. He has written more than 70 articles covering turbo-machinery, emissions, CO2 capture, and advanced power generation plants. Zachary is editor in chief of Bechtel Technology Journal and is a contributing editor to Power Magazine.
