“Our teams have worked around the clock to get emergency housing ready for Mississippians who need it,” said Andy Phelps, BNI’s program manager.
“Federal officials tell us that never before have so many people been provided temporary housing so quickly after a U.S. disaster. Across the state, we now have nearly 7,000 travel trailers and mobile homes ready for occupancy, and we continue to make strides in speeding installation work to get folks into housing even faster.”
Bechtel’s work on FEMA’s disaster relief efforts is employing 1,900 people, mostly from Mississippi and other Gulf states. To date, 60 percent of Bechtel’s subcontracts have been awarded to firms in Mississippi and 73 percent to firms from the Gulf Coast region. Further, 86 percent of Bechtel’s subcontracts have been awarded to small businesses, and Bechtel is making every effort to bring on women- and minority-owned firms.
