Pantex, Y-12, and Los Alamos and Livermore National Labs Recognized with 12 Awards

Bechtel today announced that four national security sites the company manages and operates with industry and university teammates have earned a total of 12 U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration Sustainability Awards for 2014. These awards acknowledge superior performance in sustainability by improving the management of water, energy, vehicle fleet, pollution, waste, and greenhouse gases.

The four sites received the following awards:

  • Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico, managed and operated by Los Alamos National Security, LLC—One Best in Class Award for green buildings and four Environmental Stewardship Awards for sustainability champions.
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California, managed and operated by Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC —One Environmental Stewardship Award for renewable energy.
  • Pantex Plant, Texas, managed and operated by Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC—Two Best in Class Awards for renewable energy and waste reduction.
  • Y-12 National Security Complex, Tennessee, managed and operated by Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC—One Best in Class Award for exceptional service and three Environmental Stewardship Awards for waste reduction, innovation in approaches, and communication strategies.

“These advances and innovations in sustainability help ensure the long term success of the projects, which are critical to the surrounding communities, the nation, and the environment,” said Craig Albert, president of Bechtel’s government services business. “This is not possible without the outstanding efforts of our teammates and the more than 15,000 employees at these sites. Congratulations to all of the teams for their dedication and commitment to a sustainable world.”

Bechtel’s teammates at the labs and plants include leading companies and organizations such as the University of California, URS, Babcock & Wilcox, Lockheed Martin, ATK, and Battelle Memorial institute.

The sites are all part of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s nuclear security enterprise of facilities that carry out the agency’s mission of ensuring the safety and effectiveness of U.S. nuclear defense. The four sites support the downsizing of the nation’s nuclear stockpile by conducting cutting-edge research related to energy, chemistry, supercomputing, health, and global security—among many other fields.

Sustainability is a key focus of Bechtel’s dedication to delivering world-class projects while improving the quality of life in the communities where the company works. From research and development, to design and construction, operations, and eventual decommissioning, Bechtel‘s sustainability practices span the entire facility lifecycle.
