They support the downsizing of the nation’s nuclear stockpile by conducting cutting-edge research related to physics, chemistry, supercomputing, advanced materials, and global security. NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy.
Bechtel teams with leading companies and organizations such as the University of California, AECOM, Babcock & Wilcox, Lockheed Martin, OrbitalATK, and Battelle Memorial institute for the management and operations of the labs and plants. The facilities together employ more than 15,000 people; operate vehicle fleets with hundreds of cars, trucks, and equipment; maintain buildings ranging in age from 70 years old to brand new; and in some cases run their own power plants and water treatment systems. The workforces conduct operations in highly regulated environments with complex needs in energy consumption, water use, and waste minimization and management.
Sustainability is a key focus of Bechtel’s dedication to delivering world-class projects while improving the quality of life in the communities where the company works. From research, to design and construction, purchasing decisions, and office procedures, Bechtel‘s sustainability practices span multiple areas.
