"Builders & Titans" is the third of five special issues of TIME that collectively examine the life and times of 100 luminaries. CBS News, TIME's partner in this project, airs corresponding prime-time specials. The Builders & Titans installment is scheduled to air Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 10:00 PM Eastern.
The firm that Mr. Bechtel ran from 1933 to 1960 is this year celebrating its centennial. Saluting the organization's accomplishments, including many associated with Steve Bechtel, Sr., the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., has mounted an exhibit called "The Business of Innovation: Projects from Bechtel's First Century." Since 1898, four generations of Bechtels have led the privately held business through 19,000 projects in 140 nations on all seven continents. Revenues for 1997 totaled US$11.3 billion.
