Managed by Guy Lapointe for BPR-Bechtel, the new potlining centre at Alcan's Alma smelter was an unmitigated success. As stated by Pierre Gagnon, Project Manager for the Alcan Primary Metal Group, "We benefited from four exceptional advantages: a project schedule shortened by five months, a 21% reduction in costs, the use of permanent facilities to train plant operators and early start-up of operations."

The PMI Montreal chapter launched this annual competition in May 2005 to showcase excellence in engineering project management in Quebec. This award marks the first step in the selection process for PMI International and makes BPR-Bechtel and its client, the Alcan Primary Metal Group, eligible to win the "Project of the Year Award" bestowed every year since 1989 by PMI International.
