Bechtel, Washington Group Combine To Win Doe Contract

Bechtel Washington will design, build, and commission the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) that will vitrify liquid radioactive waste at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. About 54 million gallons of waste, created from past weapons production operations, is stored in 177 underground tanks. At least 67 of the tanks are known to have leaked as much as a million gallons of waste to the surrounding soil and groundwater. Vitrification transforms liquid waste into a chemically immobile glass that is environmentally safe and stable.

"The new team is looking forward to partnering with DOE's Office of River Protection to solve this high-priority environmental problem," said Bechtel National President Tom Hash. "Our team joins the engineering, construction, and project management firm of Bechtel with the world-class vitrification capabilities of Washington Group into a dedicated project organization," Hash said.

Bechtel is ranked by Engineering News-Record as the nation's top design firm, top design/build firm and the top construction contractor. The Washington Group brings experience in research and testing, process design, and management of the commissioning and operation of the nation's only high-level waste vitrification plants in New York and South Carolina.

Bechtel Washington will begin to mobilize project personnel immediately.
