Bechtel Washington will design, build, and commission the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) that will vitrify liquid radioactive waste at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. About 54 million gallons of waste, created from past weapons production operations, is stored in 177 underground tanks. At least 67 of the tanks are known to have leaked as much as a million gallons of waste to the surrounding soil and groundwater. Vitrification transforms liquid waste into a chemically immobile glass that is environmentally safe and stable.
