Bechtel has been selected by ATCO Electric to provide project and construction management services for the Hanna Regional Transmission Development Project in Alberta, Canada. The project will expand and upgrade ATCO’s electrical transmission system in the southeastern part of the province.
Bechtel will manage project and construction services for approximately 250 miles (400 kilometers) of new and existing transmission lines, new substations, and upgrades to existing substations. The need for new transmission facilities in the Hanna region has been identified to reinforce the current transmission system and meet increased regional demand. The new facilities will enable the interconnection to wind generation as well as supply electricity to pipelines and other industrial developments.
“Alberta’s growing demand for energy has put a significant strain on its existing electric power transmission system, and this project will greatly enhance ATCO Electric’s ability to meet the demand and service its customers,” said Toby Seay, president of Bechtel’s Communications and Transmission business line. “This project also marks a new chapter for Bechtel. While we have successfully delivered dozens of power transmission projects in more than 20 countries, this is our first Canadian transmission project. We look forward to working with ATCO Electric on it.”
Bechtel, along with its Canadian affiliate Bantrel, will perform project planning, project management and procurement services. Construction of the project will begin this summer, ramping up through the winter months, with completion planned for spring 2013.
