Westinghouse and Bechtel Welcome Polish Trade Mission to U.S.
This week Westinghouse Electric Company and Bechtel welcomed a trade mission from Poland, bringing senior executives from Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) and leading Polish suppliers to the United States to strengthen transatlantic cooperation for nuclear energy.
Organized by the Nuclear Energy Institute and Poland’s Chamber of Power Industry and Environmental Protection, and led by Polish Deputy Minister Wojciech Wrochna and PEJ CEO Marek Woszczyk, the multi-day trade mission featured meetings among government officials, industry leaders, and U.S. nuclear suppliers to explore opportunities for long-term collaboration, localization and local content, and capability development for Poland’s nuclear power plant projects using Westinghouse’s advanced AP1000® modular reactor.
In May, more than 25 Polish supplier CEOs participated in the Poland Trade Mission taking place in Washington D.C., jointly organized by the Nuclear Energy Institute and Poland’s Chamber of Power Industry and Environmental Protection.
“This trade mission reflects the strong and growing partnership between the United States and Poland on nuclear energy,” said Dan Lipman, President of Global Business Initiatives at Westinghouse. “Building on the success of the current project at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in Pomerania, we are pleased to welcome PEJ and Polish suppliers to the U.S. as we to continue build a robust supply chain that supports Poland’s energy security goals while creating economic benefits on both sides of the Atlantic.”
“Bechtel was honored to host the Poland Trade Mission in our D.C. Office,” said Dena Volovar, President of Bechtel’s Nuclear, Security & Environmental business. “The week of activities demonstrated that Poland’s first nuclear power plant has a deeply committed customer, a set of Polish suppliers ready to successfully support the project, bilateral U.S. and Polish government backing, and a team capable of delivering the mission. It also underscores the strength of American global leadership in providing secure, reliable, and world-class energy infrastructure alongside trusted allies. We are proud to welcome Polish industry leaders to the United States and to support discussions that help integrate Polish companies into the global nuclear supply chain.”
Throughout the week, Westinghouse and Bechtel shared their experience delivering complex mega-projects including nuclear power plants and opportunities for suppliers to participate in future AP1000 projects globally. The Polish suppliers also had the opportunity to hear directly from U.S. suppliers who successfully delivered the AP1000 units at Plant Vogtle in the U.S. state of Georgia and discuss other local, regional, and global opportunities.
Together, Westinghouse and Bechtel bring more than 140 years of nuclear power experience deploying Poland’s first nuclear power plant at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in Pomerania, with three Westinghouse advanced AP1000 modular reactors. The project will deliver long-term economic benefits in Poland by creating thousands of highly skilled jobs and expanding opportunities for Polish businesses to participate in the nuclear supply chain.
The advanced AP1000 reactor is the only operating Generation III+ reactor with fully passive safety systems, modular construction design and the smallest footprint per MWe on the market. There are six AP1000 reactors currently setting operational performance and availability records worldwide with 14 additional reactors under construction and five more under contract. The AP1000 technology has been selected for nuclear energy programs in Poland, Ukraine and Bulgaria, and is also under consideration at multiple other sites in Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
