Bechtel has assumed responsibility for management of the site where Poland’s first nuclear power plant will be built, marking a significant milestone as the project advances from planning, permitting, and designing into large-scale site preparation and construction activities. The transition places Bechtel’s global nuclear project delivery expertise at the center of execution for Poland’s first nuclear power plant.
The handover from Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) coincides with the start of earthworks at the future plant site in Choczewo. Together, the milestones demonstrate continued progress toward delivering Poland’s first nuclear power plant, strengthening the country’s long-term energy security, and supporting economic growth through increased participation from Polish industry.
As site manager, Bechtel will oversee construction activities, coordinate contractors, supervise ongoing work, and maintain safety performance across the project site. More than 400 people are already working on the project — including roughly one-third hired in Poland —with that number expected to grow as site activities accelerate.
“As we assume responsibility for the site and begin the first permanent plant work, with the initial earthworks contract, we are focused on safely advancing the project, working closely with our Polish partners, and creating the platform for the next phase of work that will ultimately deliver a new source of reliable, carbon-free energy for Poland,” said Bechtel Project Director Ed Gore.
The start of earthworks represents the next phase of preparation for major construction activities. Initial work across this 300 hectare (740 acre) site will include grading and leveling the site, upgrading drainage systems, and constructing approximately 16 kilometers of temporary roads to support future development. Additional work will prepare areas for construction offices, logistics facilities, warehouses, equipment maintenance areas and other supporting infrastructure needed to deliver the project.
The beginning of earthworks also reflects the project’s ongoing commitment to maximizing local participation. Budimex, one of Poland’s largest construction companies, will carry out site preparation activities, joining a growing network of domestic suppliers supporting the project.
The agreement is the latest example of increasing involvement from Polish companies. Over the past year, Bechtel has signed contracts with multiple Polish firms, including DORACO and Unihouse, while continuing dozens of active procurement processes associated with the project.
PEJ has similarly expanded engagement with local industry. Since 2020, the company has awarded contracts to approximately 475 Polish businesses, including dozens of companies based in the Pomerania region.
Bechtel employees supporting the project will work in part from the company’s newly opened office in Pomerania. This Gdansk office is expected to employ approximately 200 people as the project progresses, the majority of whom will be hired locally in Poland. It serves as a hub for bringing global engineering, construction and nuclear expertise together with local talent to support delivery of Poland’s first AP1000® nuclear power plant.
