Marking 250 Years of American Progress and Bechtel’s Role in What Comes Next
Bechtel Archival Project Footage: 1920s-1960s
Infrastructure has always been at the heart of American progress. The Founding Fathers laid the philosophical foundations for a thriving nation. But it took generations of builders, laying literal foundations of concrete and steel, to make those ideals a reality.
Many of those builders proudly wore hard hats bearing the Bechtel logo. Since our company’s inception 128 years ago, whenever America dreamed of a better future, Bechtel got to work building it.
Bechtel built the connective tissue of the U.S. economy and everyday American life. While our work hasn’t always been visible, millions of Americans have felt its impact: when cities flourished because they were connected. When goods moved from factories to ports to shelves. When reliable energy powered homes, businesses, and innovation. When clean water flowed from the tap. When the lights came on. When our defense infrastructure kept us safe.
As America celebrates its 250th birthday, this country’s next chapter is already taking shape…
andBechtel will once again help build it.
A Uniquely American Legacy
Built Across Generations

Bechtel’s origin story follows a distinctly American arc. Immigration. Westward expansion. The pursuit of opportunity. Entrepreneurship.
The Bechtel family came to America from Germany in the 1700s, settling where they could find work. For our founder, Warren Bechtel, that meant heading west to Oklahoma at the turn of the twentieth century. There, grading railroad beds, he discovered a passion for construction — and a knack for building what America needed most.
Building infrastructure that has moved the country forward became a North Star for Bechtel. It has guided every generation of leadership — Stephen D. Bechtel, Stephen D. Bechtel Jr., Riley Bechtel, and now Brendan Bechtel — to push the company in necessary new directions: into new projects, new business lines, and new markets.
Most importantly, though, it has made Bechtel a steady steward of American progress. Since Warren decamped to Oklahoma, America has seen 20 U.S. presidents, economic booms and busts, profound social and political change, and sweeping technological revolutions.
Through it all, Bechtel has endured by evolving with the nation. By building what each generation needed most. By carrying forward the same American Dream that made the company possible.
Answering America’s Call
Unlocking New Eras
Bechtel Project: Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4
Every leap in a nation’s progress requires infrastructure. While Bechtel has built projects across America, our unique contribution has been delivering the generation-defining megaprojects that bridge one era of American progress to the next.
In the Beginning
At the turn of the century, a young Warren A. Bechtel set out across Oklahoma Territory with mule-drawn equipment, grading the rail lines that would open up the American West. From that first contract in 1898 through railroad expansions across California and beyond, Bechtel spent its earliest decades laying the tracks that connected a growing nation.
In the 1930s
As America emerged from the Great Depression, the nation needed to put people back to work and unlock opportunity in the West. Bechtel helped build iconic projects like the Hoover Dam and contributed to the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, alongside railroad expansions and highways that connected communities and powered economic recovery.
In the 1940s
When it became clear the Allied forces needed more industrial capacity to win World War II, Bechtel helped mobilize California’s wartime shipyards, delivering vessels that strengthened the Allied war effort.
In the Postwar Decades
As Americans sought stability and prosperity, Bechtel helped shuttle millions of Americans between suburbs and cities with the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system and the Washington Metro, while transforming urban mobility through Boston’s Central Artery/Tunnel Project.
As Cold War Tensions Mounted
We advanced America’s technological leadership by helping build Experimental Breeder Reactor I in Idaho — the first nuclear power plant to generate electricity — and contributing to infrastructure that supported the Apollo space program.
In the 1970s
Amid global oil shortages and skyrocketing prices, Bechtel helped deliver the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, unlocking domestic energy resources and strengthening America’s long-term energy security.
In the 1980s & 1990s
As nuclear energy expanded, Bechtel played a leading role in building America’s nuclear power infrastructure, including the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, the largest nuclear power facility in the United States.
In the 2000s & 2010s
During the shale revolution, Bechtel delivered projects like Sabine Pass LNG, helping transform the United States into one of the world’s leading LNG exporters. Meanwhile, we crisscrossed the country with fiber-optic networks, accelerating the digital connectivity that underpins today’s economy.
Today
We’re helping usher in a new era. From advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities and AI data centers to the energy infrastructure that powers them, Bechtel is prepping America for its next leap forward.
Exporting American Know-How
Strengthening the Global Community
Bechtel Projects: Trans-Arabian Pipeline, Western Sydney International Airport, Channel Tunnel, Pluto Train 2, Riyadh Metro, Chernobyl New Safe Confinement
No nation exists in a vacuum. America’s prosperity has always been tied, in part, to the prosperity of our neighbors, trading partners, and the broader global community.
That’s why a few decades after putting down roots in the United States, Bechtel began expanding into international markets. Since then, we’ve built entire industrial cities from the ground up. We’ve delivered mines, refineries, and pipelines that helped power emerging economies. And we’ve connected countries with projects like the Channel Tunnel — and numerous other rail systems, airports, and motorways.
But we’ve also delivered more than projects. Whenever we’ve entered a country, we’ve brought our engineering, construction, and project management expertise in tow.
Our goal has always been to build lasting capabilities. We have 35 offices in 21 countries. We train and hire local workers. We invest in local businesses, develop local suppliers, and leave communities stronger than we found them.
Any celebration of Bechtel’s impact in America would not be complete without acknowledging how our work abroad has expanded economic opportunity at home, benefited the countries where we operate, and helped create a more interconnected world.
A Builder of Builders
Fostering America’s Talent

For all the projects we’ve delivered over the past 128 years, Bechtel’s greatest investment has always been in people.
We’ve developed generations of engineers, project managers, skilled craft professionals, and leaders capable of tackling America’s most complex infrastructure challenges — patenting new innovations and setting industry standards along the way.
Technical excellence and leading workplace practices have long been synonymous with Bechtel. We were the first major contractor to require hard hats on construction sites. We pioneered a new concrete pouring method at the Hoover Dam. And we launched Bechtel Fellows, a program for world-class scientists, engineers, and supply chain innovators to advance technical excellence across the enterprise.
In the program’s 41-year history, past Fellows have pioneered innovations ranging from early 3D modeling to seismic analysis software to welding techniques that have improved efficiency to game-changing water treatment systems, and much more.
Over the years, hundreds of thousands have come to Bechtel for the chance to work on ambitious projects. Many stayed because they got to be a part of something bigger than themselves: building the infrastructure that has shaped generations of American life.
As we look toward the next 250 years of American progress, we’re investing just as heavily in the next generation of builders — in their training, their development, and their well-being.
Because we know America’s futuredepends on them.
America’s Next Big Build
The Work Starts Now

Bechtel has never been stronger.
Today, we’re delivering three nuclear plants using three different advanced reactor technologies. We have built 55% of the U.S. Gulf Coast LNG capacity to date, and counting.
We’re developing the Thacker Pass lithium mine — which will increase America’s domestic production of this critical mineral more than eightfold.
And we’re constructing the first phase of what will become America’s largest semiconductor manufacturing campus.
But we’re not stopping there.
America is at an inflection point. The rise of artificial intelligence, coupled with growing energy demand and the need to modernize aging infrastructure, will require us to build at a scale not seen in decades. And the stakes couldn’t be higher.
That’s why Bechtel is making the biggest investments in technology and innovation in our history. We’re reimagining how projects are delivered to improve productivity. We’re investing in our workforce — their skills, their experience, their safety, their well-being — and expanding our pipeline of talent. And we’re embracing our core ethos of living for a challenge.
Whenever America has dreamed of a better future, Bechtel built it. As America dreams again, we’ll get to work.
