Reflecting on the Tragedy at Port Arthur LNG

Bechtel is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of three colleagues on April 29 at a construction project in Port Arthur, Texas. Below is a message sent to employees on April 29 co-signed by Chairman & CEO Brendan Bechtel and President & COO Craig Albert:

Colleagues,

Earlier today, we received the tragic news that last night, just before 2 a.m. at the Port Arthur LNG site in Texas, a safety incident occurred while work on an LNG tank was being performed at elevation. We are devastated to share that three of our craft professional colleagues—Reginald Magee, Felipe Mendez, and Felix Lopez Sr.—lost their lives, and two more sustained minor injuries.

No words are adequate to express how deeply the loss of three of our colleagues is felt. Right now, we are holding their families, friends, and coworkers in our hearts as the entire Bechtel community mourns. They have our deepest condolences and unwavering support.

We also want to reaffirm the preciousness of every life on a Bechtel project. Ensuring that every colleague returns home safely at the end of each day is and must always be our highest calling and value. Today’s events underscore the gravity of that responsibility.

We are cooperating fully with OSHA and local officials as they investigate the incident. We have also begun our own comprehensive internal review to understand how this happened. In the meantime, we have suspended work at Port Arthur until further notice and will restart with the appropriate care and recognition of the losses that have been suffered. And out of an abundance of caution, we have also paused tank work at two other projects where similar work was underway.

Our thoughts are with the families of Reginald, Felipe, Felix, and all our colleagues at Port Arthur. As we all process this news, we ask that you please look out for yourself and your teammates, and we urge anyone who is struggling to use our Employee Assistance Program for access to mental health and counseling resources.

Thank you,

Brendan and Craig
