Bechtel and ENKA Celebrate Opening of New Sections of Serbia’s Morava Corridor Motorway, Delivering Thousands of Serbian Jobs, Flood Protection for Communities, and Lasting Local Investment
With Sections 8 and 9 now open, more than 100 of the motorway’s 112 kilometers are in service — boosting the economy through better transport links and local investment, with 82% of procurement delivered through Serbian businesses.
Bechtel, alongside its joint venture partner ENKA, marked the opening of Sections 8 and 9 of Serbia’s Morava Corridor Motorway, bringing more than 100 kilometers of motorway into service and the project to within a single section of full completion. The milestone underscores how the Morava Corridor is delivering tangible benefits for Serbia today, including thousands of local jobs, stronger protection for communities against flooding, and broad investment in Serbian businesses.
The newly opened 28.7-kilometer stretch connects the Preljina–Čačak interchange to the Adrani–Kraljevo interchange, further advancing one of Serbia’s largest infrastructure investments to improve mobility and connectivity in the region. Among those in attendance at the opening ceremony were Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and the Director of Corridors of Serbia Aleksandar Antić.
Key Facts at a Glance
- More than 100 km of the 112 km motorway are now open to traffic — only one section remains.
- Approximately 4,200 craft professionals were employed at peak construction, a substantial proportion of them Serbian nationals.
- 82% of project procurement has been delivered through Serbian businesses.
- Extensive flood defenses protect communities: ~36 km of river regulation, 13 km of river diversions, 28 km of dykes, and 160+ large culverts.
- When complete, the Morava Corridor will be Serbia’s first digital motorway, with smart traffic systems, 82 bridges, and 13 interchanges.
- The corridor links central Serbia to Pan-European Corridors X and XI along the West Morava River valley.
“The Morava Corridor is a nationally significant project that will transform how people and goods move across Serbia and the region, strengthening connections between communities and supporting long-term economic growth,” said Darren Mort, President of Bechtel’s Infrastructure business. “We’re proud that locals are already enjoying the benefits of the corridor, and that the investment is flowing into Serbian businesses, skills, and communities. We’ve been delivering at pace and while managing the complexity of constructing both a motorway and an extensive network of major flood protection infrastructure – opening in sections to bring positive impacts as soon as possible.”
Built by Serbia, for Serbia: Jobs and Local Investment
The Morava Corridor is one of the largest drivers of local economic activity in central Serbia. At peak construction, the project employed approximately 4,200 craft professionals, a substantial proportion of them Serbian nationals, and 82% of project procurement has been delivered through Serbian businesses — channeling investment directly into local suppliers, contractors, and communities.
A central priority has been investment in safety and quality training. By developing the skills of the Serbian workforce, the project is creating a lasting legacy of qualified professionals who will continue to contribute to Serbia’s infrastructure and economy long after the motorway is complete.
Protecting Communities from Flooding
Sections 8 and 9, in the western part of the motorway, include significant river regulation and flood defense works — a critical component of the project designed to protect the motorway and surrounding communities from the region’s longstanding flooding challenges. Across the full alignment, the project incorporates approximately 36 kilometers of river regulation, 13 kilometers of river diversions, 28 kilometers of dykes, and more than 160 large culverts, providing long-term climate resilience for the West Morava River valley.
A Modern, Safer Motorway for Central Serbia
Stretching more than 112 kilometers, the completed Morava Corridor Motorway will transform central Serbia by linking key regions to Pan-European Corridors X and XI, improving transport efficiency and safety, and supporting long-term economic growth along the West Morava River valley. When complete, it will be Serbia’s first digital motorway, equipped with smart traffic systems and incorporating 82 bridges and 13 interchanges designed to enhance safety and improve the travel experience.
