Bechtel and its joint-venture partner ENKA are delivering North Macedonia’s largest infrastructure project, designing and constructing 112 kilometers of new motorway that will strengthen connections across the country and throughout Southeast Europe.
Once complete, Corridors 8 and 10d will provide faster, safer connections between the Adriatic and Black Seas, strengthen North Macedonia’s role in regional and European trade, connect the country to key Pan-European transport networks, and support long-term economic growth across the Balkans.
The Corridors 8 and 10d project is one of the country’s most significant transportation investments. The scope includes 112 kilometers of new motorway, 45 bridges, 28 overpasses, and 26 underpasses — creating a modern transportation network that will improve safety, strengthen regional connectivity, and support economic opportunity.
Corridor 8 stretches east to west across North Macedonia and forms part of the Pan-European Transport Network, connecting Albania, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria. The route has also been recognized by NATO as critical infrastructure, reflecting its strategic importance to the region.
Corridor 10d connects Prilep and Bitola while linking to Pan-European Corridor 10 — a major north-south transportation route connecting Central Europe with the Balkans and Greece.
Construction is advancing across Corridors 8 and 10d. Since work began in 2023, the team has made progress on major earthworks, bridge construction, drainage systems, and roadway infrastructure. This will include more than 30 million cubic meters of excavation, 580,000 million cubic meters of concrete, and 1.2 million tons of asphalt.
The project spans four sections across North Macedonia. Sections 1, 2, and 3 form Corridor 8, an east-west route connecting the Adriatic and Black Seas. Section 4 is Corridor 10d, a key link in the broader Pan-European Corridor 10 transportation network.
Each section presents unique engineering challenges — from maintaining traffic on existing roadways to upgrading highways and building major bridges through mountainous terrain.
Together with our customer and local partners, Bechtel-ENKA is helping strengthen North Macedonia’s workforce, support local communities, and create lasting opportunities beyond construction.
Through partnerships with universities and schools across North Macedonia, we are preparing the next generation of the workforce by connecting classroom learning with real-world project experience. Initiatives include site visits to the motorway project, mentorship opportunities, and support for civil engineering programs at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje and the International Vision University in Gostivar.
In 2026, Bechtel-ENKA hosted an Innovation Expo, where university students worked alongside the project team to develop proof-of-concept solutions for challenges faced on motorway projects.
The team is also committed to delivering these motorways with a focus on safety, quality, sustainability, and efficiency. Working with local schools and community organizations, we are supporting road safety education and environmental stewardship through tree planting and community clean-up initiatives.
The project’s impact also extends to the local economy. Nearly 100 subcontractors are supporting delivery, with more than 90% sourced lo cally, helping strengthen North Macedonia’s construction industry while creating jobs and building local capability.

For more than 30 years , Bechtel-ENKA has delivered landmark transportation projects across the Balkans. This includes Croatia’s 156-kilometer Bregana–Zagreb–Dubrovnik Motorway and the 61-kilometer, four-lane Albanian Motorway between Rrëshen and Kalimash, which reduced travel time from six hours to two and created a vital link to Kosovo. The joint venture also supported the development of Romania’s Transylvania Motorway.
In Kosovo, Bechtel-ENKA delivered Route 7 and Route 6 motorways, creating a continuous corridor from Albania through Pristina to North Macedonia. Route 7 was completed a year ahead of schedule, and Route 6 added 65 kilometers of four-lane motorway, reducing travel time between Pristina and North Macedonia to approximately 45 minutes.
Together, these projects strengthened regional connectivity while supporting trade and economic growth. Bechtel-ENKA earned an Engineering News-Record Global Best Project award and two International Road Federation’s Global Road Achievement awards for its work on the Kosovo motorway.
