The Bechtel-built mine, one of the largest copper resources, features a first-of-its-kind desalination plant and will operate on 100% renewable energy by 2025.
Bechtel is delivering one of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects — a state-of-the-art airport designed to handle 10 million passengers annually.
The Sept. 11, 2001, attacks destroyed the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) station beneath the World Trade Center — a vital link in the 13.8-mile rail system connecting New Jersey and New York. Bechtel supported a major effort to reconnect Lower Manhattan by delivering a temporary PATH station that restored rail service to the heart of the city.
As construction manager for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Downtown Restoration Program, Bechtel reestablished critical transit links within 24 months — ahead of schedule. The team rebuilt track infrastructure, provided temporary interim service to Exchange Place Station, and delivered a new temporary PATH terminal at Ground Zero.
Built for speed, flexibility, and function, the new station restored transit access for thousands of daily commuters. It featured new trackwork, a canopy entrance, and Iridescent Lightning — a mosaic mural by Italian artist Giulio Candussio.
On Nov. 23, 2003, the first train into the new station was the same one that carried people to safety on 9/11. For many, its return was symbolic and deeply personal.
This [station] symbolizes the successful evacuation of more than 25,000 people from the World Trade Center complex on September 11, and honors the heroism of the hundreds of police, firefighters, rescue workers and civilians who sacrificed their lives on that terrible morning so that others could live.”

Engineering Resilience
Although intended as a temporary solution, the station became a testament to resilience and recovery — and enabled continued service while construction of the permanent World Trade Center Transportation Hub moved forward.
What Made the Difference?
Reconnecting Lower Manhattan took more than technical expertise — it took speed, focus, and purpose.
Speed with Precision
We mobilized quickly and helped deliver the station ahead of schedule, restoring vital commuter services.
Experience Under Pressure
Our decades of experience working on complex transit systems prepared us to deliver in a constrained site, surrounded by ongoing recovery and redevelopment.
Purpose-Driven Performance
This wasn’t just another job. We knew what this station meant to New Yorkers — and approached every phase with urgency and empathy.
Delivering a Lasting Landmark
The temporary station served commuters for more than a decade — until the permanent World Trade Center Transportation Hub opened in 2016.
Today, the new hub — known as the Oculus — anchors Lower Manhattan as a modern transit gateway. What began as an emergency rebuild now stands as a lasting symbol of resilience, connection, and the future of New York.
