Times Square Subway Reconstruction

Modernizing New York City’s Busiest Subway Station

At the heart of Manhattan, the Times Square–42nd Street subway station connects multiple major subway lines and serves as a critical transit hub for New York City. With its maze of passageways and platforms, it has long been one of the city’s most congested stations.

As part of a multi-agency effort to modernize the station, Bechtel provided pre-construction services that laid the foundation for a transformative, multi-phase reconstruction. Working with the Times Square Subway Improvement Corporation, we developed cost estimates, baseline schedules, and logistics strategies tailored to one of the busiest and most constrained urban environments in the world.

Laying the Groundwork for Transformation

The revitalization plan included constructing a new mezzanine over the Interborough Rapid Transit on 7th Avenue, building new station entrances integrated into nearby developments, and installing elevators to improve accessibility. Major utility relocation — including a 48-inch water main and dense underground cabling — required careful coordination to avoid service disruptions and ensure public safety.

Bechtel’s role included:

Planning for a Live Urban Site

With hundreds of thousands of daily commuters relying on uninterrupted service, minimizing disruption was essential. Our planning focused on maintaining passenger flow, ensuring safe access, and sequencing work to avoid impacts to revenue operations — a principle that still guides our urban infrastructure work today.

Building Smarter From the Start

From the outset, we explored alternative delivery models to improve flexibility and reduce risk. Our recommendations helped shape an approach that balanced speed, safety, and cost — laying the foundation for successful delivery in one of the city’s most complex transit hubs.
