Landmark Metro Rail Project Advances with the Support of Bechtel Consortium

Sepulveda Transit Corridor Partners celebrates LA Metro Board of Directors’ decision to deliver underground rail connecting the San Fernando Valley and Westside

Bechtel, a core member of the Sepulveda Transit Corridor Partners (STCP) consortium, alongside Meridiam and American Triple I (ATI),  welcomes the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) Board of Directors’ vote to select a modified version of its alternative for a high-capacity, fully underground rail line connecting the San Fernando Valley to the Westside — one of the most significant transit investments in the country. The project will expand reliable, high-capacity transit along one of Los Angeles’ most heavily travelled corridors while strengthening long-term regional connectivity.

Metro’s selection follows a process involving extensive technical evaluation, environmental review, and public engagement.

“High-capacity transit is foundational to how growing metropolitan regions expand mobility, support economic growth, and connect communities to opportunity,” said Jacob Mumm, General Manager of Bechtel’s Public Infrastructure Business“With deep roots in California and decades of experience delivering complex rail projects across the world, Bechtel is proud to support Metro and our consortium partners as they advance this transformative investment for Los Angeles.”

The fully underground rail system is anticipated to serve more than 100,000 daily riders, providing a fast and reliable alternative to Interstate 405 while improving connectivity in one of the region’s most congested corridors. Initial operating section stations are anticipated to include Metro G Line, Ventura Boulevard, the University of California, Los Angeles, and Wilshire/Metro D Line, expanding access to jobs, education, healthcare, and key destinations across the region.

Bechtel brings decades of experience delivering large-scale, technically complex transit systems. Recent projects include the Riyadh Metro — the world’s largest fully automated, driverless rail network — and London’s Elizabeth Line, one of Europe’s most significant rail investments.

Founded in California, Bechtel’s roots are in the state’s transportation infrastructure, beginning with early railroad projects and the establishment of operations in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the company was headquartered for more than a century. More than 50 years ago, Bechtel delivered the original Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, and today Bechtel teams are delivering BART Silicon Valley Phase 2. The company also brings decades of sustained local experience, having partnered with the Riverside County Transportation Commission since 1987 to deliver transportation infrastructure in Southern California, building on a broader legacy of designing and delivering complex infrastructure across California, including rail, roads, bridges, dams, and pipelines.
