Bechtel announced today that the company has received the prestigious 2014 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Security Service. The award honors government contractors that have maintained the highest standards for overseeing the protection of the nation’s classified assets in accordance with the National Industrial Security Program.
The Reston, Virginia office of Bechtel’s U.S. government services company, Bechtel National, Inc., was selected as one of only 40 recipients of this year’s award, which represents 0.3 percent of more than 13,300 defense contractor facilities.
“Protecting national security information and assets is an essential part of our mission-critical work for our government customers, and this honor is a testament to our teams who carry out the work with the greatest care,” said Craig Albert, president of Bechtel’s government services global business unit. “Maintaining secure facilities and programs is non-negotiable and requires the daily focus of our teams and leaders. We are honored to receive this award.”
This is the first time Bechtel National has received the Cogswell Award, the highest U.S. honor a company can receive for its industrial security program. In addition, the company has earned seven consecutive “Superior” security ratings, the highest possible, from the Defense Security Service.
The award selection process is rigorous, requiring nominated facilities to clearly demonstrate a sustained degree of excellence and innovation in security program management, implementation, and oversight. The award criteria also include leadership in helping other facilities establish best practices. Established in 1966, the award is named in honor of the first chief of industrial security within the Department of Defense.
Bechtel has been a leading defense contractor for the U.S. government for more than 50 years. The company is responsible for chemical weapons disassembly and destruction projects in Pueblo, Colorado and Richmond, Kentucky; missile defense infrastructure and operations at the Reagan Ballistic Missile Test Site in the Marshall Islands; and nuclear nonproliferation projects around the world.
