Unprecedented expertise in tunneling and pipelines

Only Bechtel has the global resources and reach, combined with unmatched tunneling, pipeline and water system expertise, to offer customers certainty of delivery.

Water Intake, Oak Creek Power Plant, Wisconsin, USA

As part of the Oak Creek Power Plant Expansion, Bechtel built a deep rock tunnel under Lake Michigan forming the water intake to the Oak Creek Power Generating Station on the west side of the lake. The 28-foot (8.5-meter) diameter, 1.7-mile (2.8-kilometer) long tunnel was excavated by a tunnel boring machine under the lake terminating in 24 submerged high-capacity wedge-wire screens. The screens protect the fish and other aquatic life within the lake by reducing the water approach velocity with their large surface area.  The onshore reach of the tunnel delivers 1,650 cubic feet (47 cubic meters) per second of water to the new pump house.

Rio Tinto Alcan Backup Tunnel, Canada

Work included drilling and blasting 883,000 cubic feet (25,000 cubic meters) of solid granite for five separate tunnels.

Rail Tunnels, London, UK

Bechtel is constructing a new tunnel beneath central London, building nine train stations, rebuilding or overhauling other stations, and upgrading existing track for the Crossrail project. This project includes 13 miles (21 kilometers) of tunnels through ground that is honeycombed with networks of sewer lines, water and gas mains, foundations of buildings, and London Underground tunnels dating to the 1860s.

Pipelines

Bechtel has delivered more than 50,000 miles (80,000 kilometers) of pipelines, including more than 1,759 miles (2,816 kilometers) of water pipelines.

At our Escondida Water Supply project in Chile, we created a first-of-a-kind system that desalinates and delivers sustainable, fresh water to the world's largest copper mine. The water travels more than 112 miles (180 kilometers)—from the ocean and through the desert—to its destination located 10,500 feet (3,200 meters) above sea level in the Andes mountains.
