Absorption chilling in LNG plants
LNG liquefaction plants can benefit significantly by power augmentation of gas turbines. Gas turbine inlet cooling solutions, such as evaporative and mechanical cooling systems, have been operating for several years and are currently being implemented in 11 large LNG trains utilizing the ConocoPhillips Optimized Cascade® LNG Process.
The use of ammonia absorbing chilling, combined with waste heat recovery as an alternative to mechanical chilling, offers several advantages including:
- reduced parasitic electric power resulting in reduced fuel consumption and emissions
- reduced number of gas turbines required for power demand; and
- the capability to heat gas turbine inlet air for anti-icing during cold weather conditions.
