Supporting civilian and national defense programs

Bechtel has a proud history of serving space launch facility and missile infrastructure customers that dates back to the early 1960’s. We stand ready to bring our decades of experience to your most complex space and launch infrastructure projects. To schedule a meeting with our experts, click here.

Key Projects

Arnold Engineering Development Complex

Arnold Engineering Development Complex

Bechtel leads the team executing test operations and sustainment for Arnold Engineering Development Complex, the ground test facility where nearly every U.S. aerospace system proves itself in massive wind tunnels, test stands, and climate chambers.

NASA Mobile Launcher 2

NASA Mobile Launcher 2

In 2019 NASA chose Bechtel National Inc., along with teaming subcontractors, to design, build, test, and commission Mobile Launcher 2, the ground structure that will be used to assemble and launch the next version of the Space Launch System rocket. SLS could one day take materials and astronauts to the Moon or Mars.

Ground-based Midcourse Missile Defense

Ground-based Midcourse Missile Defense

Bechtel performed design, procurement, fabrication, and installation of launch systems in Alaska and California, and a $200 million test bed program.

In 1961, when President Kennedy challenged Americans to put a human on the moon by 1970, the Bechtel organization had already been building space launch facilities for three years. We supported the Gemini and Apollo programs, readying launch pads, research centers, test facilities, space simulators, and assembly buildings. We have designed and built facilities for assembling and launching space launch vehicles and spacecraft, including the two most advanced launch facilities in the world at the time, Space Launch Complex 3-East at Vandenberg Air Force Base and Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral.

Technical capabilities

We provide a full spectrum of technical services, including conceptual trade studies, systems integration, operations planning, and design of:

  • Complex structural and blast-resistant facilities
  • Innovative mechanical movement systems, including bridge cranes, access platforms, lifting hoists, and handling systems
  • Ultra-high-pressure gas, triple-redundant HVAC, corrosion protection, and other systems
  • Clean enclosures and other specialized facilities
  • Physical and electronic security and access control systems

Our customers and their missions benefit from efficiencies gained from more than 120 years of global megaproject delivery.
