    New Carbon Capture Technology Featured In The New York Times

    The New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman recently featured carbon capture technology developed by Calera Corporation. Calera’s innovative process captures carbon dioxide emissions emitted by coal or gas-fired power plants and converts it into calcium and magnesium carbonates for use in manufacturing carbon negative products such as sand, aggregate, supplementary cementitious materials, and cement, as well as fresh water.

    For the past 20 years, Bechtel has partnered with the National Engineers Week Foundation on DiscoverE, a “teach in” in the United States that introduces primary and secondary school students to the exciting possibilities of a career in engineering. Stephen Bechtel Jr, the company's third-generation leader, helped create DiscoverE in 1990, while chairing Engineers Week. Bechtel has backed Engineers Week through financial support and very active employee involvement.     Bechtel Announces Epc Contract For Queensland Curtis Lng Project

    Bechtel's Oil, Gas & Chemicals business unit has signed a multibillion-dollar EPC contract for the Queensland Curtis LNG project, located on Curtis Island near Gladstone, Australia. The two-train LNG facility will be owned and operated by QGC, a BG Group business. The project is currently ramping up engineering and placing orders for long lead equipment. Full notice to proceed is expected later this year, following approval of the project’s environmental impact statement.

    Loan Guarantees Offered For Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System

    The U.S. Department of Energy has conditionally granted $1.37 billion in loan guarantees for construction and start up of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in southeastern California being built by BrightSource Energy Inc. and Bechtel. Bechtel partnered with BrightSource on the Ivanpah project as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, and is an equity investor in the project, which will generate approximately 400 megawatts of power.

    The W. H. Sammis Air Quality Control Project, for which Bechtel provided engineering, procurement, construction, and startup services, received honorable mention in the 2010 Power Engineering Projects of the Year awards. The plant was recognized in the best coal-fired project category.
