Bechtel announced today the opening of the Bechtel National Planetarium at Columbia Basin College (CBC) in Pasco, Washington. Equipped with the latest technology, the facility is designed to increase interest in math and science education through astronomy.  The planetarium, funded in part by a $100,000 donation from Bechtel, illustrates the power of communities and businesses partnering to encourage the next generation of scientists.

Bechtel has been awarded the overall program management contract for the King Abdullah project for Waad Al Shamaal City development by Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma’aden). Bechtel, which developed the megaproject’s master plan, will oversee the engineering and construction of the planned city and industrial complex, near Turayf in northern Saudi Arabia. The company will also perform the front-end engineering and design of the planned city.

Bechtel and its joint venture partner, Enka, delivered an additional 11.5 miles (18.5 kilometers) of the Kosovo “Ibrahim Rugova” Motorway. The new section was completed seven months ahead of schedule and within budget. Since 2010, Bechtel and Enka have delivered 38 miles (61 kilometers) of the motorway, which now connects the Kosovo capital of Pristina and the industrial region of Peja to Morinë on the border with Albania.

Bechtel announced today that Savannah River Remediation (SRR) has received the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star of Excellence award. The honor recognizes SRR for its programs to ensure the health and safety of workers at DOE’s Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina. Bechtel is part of SRR, the liquid waste contractor responsible for the remediation of radioactive waste at the former nuclear weapons production facility.

Bechtel announced today that it has signed a license agreement with JSC Pavlodar Oil Chemistry Refinery (POCR) for a major modernization and process design of a delayed coking unit (DCU) complex in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. The DCU complex will use Bechtel’s ThruPlus® Coking technology, a proprietary process for upgrading heavy oil into high-value, light hydrocarbon liquids and petroleum coke.

Bechtel announced today that construction is under way on a 758-megawatt natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle power plant in Sherman, Texas. The company, along with Siemens, is designing and building the project for Panda Sherman Power, LLC, an affiliate of Panda Power Funds. Today representatives from the three companies joined dignitaries from across the state for a groundbreaking ceremony.

Bechtel announced today that a groundbreaking study to improve the safety of shipping ports has entered a new phase.  The Research on the Passing Effects on Ships (ROPES) project, an international joint-industry research initiative led by Bechtel, has now moved from computer simulation to testing involving ships in port.  The results of the research will set new international guidelines for the design and construction of future ports.

Unit 2 of Prairie State Energy Campus's 1600-megawatt power plant went live today, producing commercial power for its nine owners and their 2.5 million customers. Unit 2 is now under the control of the Prairie State Energy Campus (PSEC) team, a significant milestone in the process of completing the largest coal-fueled power plant built in the U.S. in the last 30 years. Beginning November 3, 2012, all 1,600 megawatts of PSEC power will be scheduled by the PSEC owners for the benefit of and use by its municipal and electric cooperative customer/members, from Missouri to West Virginia.
