Bechtel today signed its first subcontract with an Iraqi company under its prime contract supporting USAID's Iraq Infrastructure Reconstruction Program. The scope of work of the subcontract is to design and construct a bridge bypass of about 1.5 km in length for a critical highway in the western part of the country.Al-Bunnia Trading Company, a 93-year-old Baghdad-based construction firm, will work with Bechtel supervisors to provide field engineering services and construct the bypass on Highway 10 near the war-damaged Al Mat Bridge, which is located about 300 km west of Baghdad and 180 km from the Jordanian border.

Recent articles in The New Yorker magazine and on the CNN/Money Magazine Web site purport to have uncovered ties between the bin Laden family and Bechtel via the Fremont Group. The New Yorker goes so far as to suggest that revenue from Bechtel´s work on civilian infrastructure in Iraq supports the terrorist activities of Osama bin Laden. The assertion is reckless and false.

Foster Wheeler Ltd. (NYSE: FWC) announced today that BSF, a consortium of Bechtel Petroleum & Chemical of the United States, Sinopec Engineering Inc. (SEI) of China, and Foster Wheeler Energy Limited of the UK, has been appointed as the project management contractor by CNOOC and Shell Petrochemicals Company Ltd. (CSPC) for the implementation phase of a world-scale, $4.3 billion petrochemicals complex in China’s Guangdong province.

Bechtel National, Inc. is hosting contractor-supplier conferences this month to inform the worldwide contracting community of its role in USAID´s Iraq Infrastructure Reconstruction Program. The first conference will be held on May 21 in Washington, D.C., from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

On April 25, 2003, Curaçao Airport Partners, a consortium led by Alterra Partners—an affiliate of Bechtel Enterprises—signed a 30-year concession agreement to develop and operate Curaçao International Airport in the Netherlands Antilles. The Consortium also includes Trabajos Industriales y Mecánicos, C.A. and Janssen de Jong.
