EletroPaulo Metropolitana, the São Paulo-based electric utility, announced that an InterGen-led consortium has won the award to construct the nominal 900 MW combined-cycle São Paulo I and II project, formerly known as the Piratininga project, in São Paulo, Brazil. The winning consortium, named Onyx Generating Limitada, is composed of InterGen, Shell Generating Ltd., and Brazilian-based VBC Energia. Six international consortia originally submitted bids for Piratininga on December 22, 1997.

Cogentrix Energy, Inc. has signed an agreement with Bechtel Enterprises, Inc. to acquire Bechtel's ownership interests in twelve electric generating facilities and one interstate natural gas pipeline in the United States. The acquisition of these facilities will provide Cogentrix with a net equity interest of 360 megawatts in a diverse generating portfolio that comprises over 2,424 megawatts in total plant capacity. The assets are located in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Massachusetts, and Florida. Nine of the generating facilities were developed, are managed, and are owned in part by U.S. Generating Company (USGen).

Building A Century: Bechtel Celebrates Centennial From Hoover Dam To Space Launch Facilities, All Un

 Bechtel, a premier builder of the 20th century, launched a year-long celebration of its centennial this morning at Boulder City, Nevada, and nearby Hoover Dam. The first of many events worldwide, the Nevada kickoff recognized one of the engineering, construction, and development company's early large-scale triumphs.It was 100 years ago that Warren A. Bechtel put aside his rancher's tools, hitched up his two mules, and hired out as a grader on an Oklahoma railroad. Before long, his W.A. Bechtel Co. was building roads, tunnels, bridges, pipelines, and dams. Hoover Dam would be his last and largest effort and the first of Bechtel's many megaprojects.

Bechtel has elected two new board members—Alan Dachs and Mike Thiele.Alan Dachs has been elected to the Bechtel Group board of directors and by the Bechtel Enterprises board of directors to its executive committee. Dachs is president and chief executive officer of The Fremont Group, the San Francisco-based private investment company in which the Bechtel family retains a majority interest. With more than $7 billion in assets under management, Fremont had its best year ever in 1996.
