Converting traditional oil and natural gas facilities to produce renewable fuels

To deliver cleaner energy and lower carbon emissions, many refiners are converting their facilities to process bio-feedstocks and create advanced renewable fuels.

By applying emerging technologies in the earliest phases of project development, we help our customers increase energy efficiency, and decarbonize execution across the project lifecycle to produce clean energy.

Bechtel has over 70 years of experience supporting refining customers globally. We’ve completed over 275 refinery expansions and modernizations and delivered the world’s first commercial-scale synthetic fuels plant using natural gas feedstock.

SWSPlusâ„  technology – clean, smart, resilient

We provide expert solutions for industrial facilities to become greener, smarter and more resilient through advanced fuels using renewable feedstocks and pathways to manufacture products more sustainably.

Our SWSPlusâ„  technology treats high CO2, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) sour water streams that are typically unwanted by-products in any refinery. Because the ammonia and hydrogen sulfide are recovered from the wastewater effluent before incineration, the processes reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The recovered hydrogen sulfide can be converted to elemental sulfur, and the ammonia can be used within the refinery or sold as an additional source of revenue.

In addition, removing the ammonia from the Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) feed allows for higher nitrogen and sulfur crude processing without the need for SRU expansion; it increases SRU capacity, and provides significant savings compared to developing a new SRU complex.
