Principal Vice President Manager of Functions & Sectors – Infrastructure
Mark Smethurst is a principal vice president of Bechtel Corporation and manager of functions and sectors for Bechtel’s Infrastructure Global Business Unit. He has 30 years of international experience in construction, engineering, project controls, and project management.
Mark’s successful execution experience in multiple sectors and regions, on projects and within functions, makes him uniquely qualified to lead functions and sectors across the Infrastructure business unit.
He was most recently project manager for the civil works joint venture on the Riyadh Metro Project in Saudi Arabia, where he has served as a key member of the project leadership team since 2015.
For more than 20 years Mark has worked across multiple business lines at Bechtel, including power, rail, transmission, renewables, and communications. His broad knowledge of our global operations comes from previous assignments in the UK, Europe, North America, and Saudi Arabia.
Mark joined Bechtel Infrastructure in 1997 as a construction site manager on water treatment projects in the UK.
His diverse roles at Bechtel include operations manager for the power and communications business lines, estimating and project controls manager in power, and manager of construction for the water and telecommunications business units. He brings strong project management expertise, commercial acumen, and an open leadership style to his work.
Mark is also acting as aviation sector lead until a final appointment is made.
Mark earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Oxford Polytechnic, and is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He was elected a Bechtel principal vice president in 2012.
