General Manager, United Kingdom
John Williams is the managing director of Bechtel Infrastructure in the U.K., responsible for overseeing active projects and leading the strategy for the company’s aviation, rail, civil, power, and telecommunications work. Prior to this role, he was the Bechtel deputy project director for Crossrail, a 73-mile (117-kilometer) railway line that crosses through London.
Previously, John was manager of Bechtel’s Nuclear, Security & Environmental global business unit’s international portfolio and the U.K. marketing and business development lead for the company’s infrastructure business. In this dual role, he led the effort to expand Bechtel’s defense, nuclear decommissioning, and nuclear new-build capabilities into non-U.S. markets, and provide operational oversight to those contracts.
John joined Bechtel in 2012, responsible for new business development in the U.K. defense market. In 2014, he led Bechtel’s successful bid to transform project- and supply-chain management at the U.K. Ministry of Defence’s military acquisition organization.
Prior to Bechtel, John had an accomplished career in U.K. Government, serving as a special adviser from 2005 to 2009 in the cabinet office, and the energy and defence departments. He gained business strategy and commercial experience with Serco Group Plc and an understanding of procurement policy and practice as CBI director of public services.
In 1998, John was appointed founding director of the New Local Government Network, creating one of the most successful and influential public policy think tanks in the U.K.
John earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in politics and international relations from Lancaster University.
