General Manager, Downstream & Chemicals
Joe Thompson is general manager of the Downstream and Chemicals business line in Bechtel's Oil, Gas & Chemicals business unit. He was elected a senior vice president in 2014.
Joe has extensive experience in megaproject development and execution, deep knowledge of the refining, onshore oil and gas, and petrochemicals markets; and a proven track record of engaging teams and stakeholders in successful project delivery.
Throughout his 38-year career with Bechtel, Joe served in a variety of engineering, construction, project controls, and project management roles holding key management positions on projects in the U.S., Malaysia, China, and the Middle East. In 2007, Joe was named president of Bantrel, a Bechtel affiliate in Canada. He later assumed program management responsibility for the Motiva Crude Expansion project in Texas, completing the construction and commissioning phases.
Joe became the general manager of Bechtel's Downstream and Chemicals business line in 2017. He was crucial to Bechtel securing engineering, procurement and construction contract for a new ethane cracker complex in Pennsylvania, subsequently leading the project to site mobilization.
Joe has a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Clarkson University in New York, and he is a registered professional engineer in Texas.
