Workshops We Offer

Workshops that may be offered include:

  • Graphics Design - Girls use a digital camera and make posters to reflect a theme from the day, adding a background, color, and text.  They use the Internet (and learn about Internet safety), create the layout in PowerPoint, and then print out the color poster to take home.
  • Egg Drop / Optical Illusions - Girls work together to prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from various heights using a given set of supplies. Discussion includes how to do this cost effectively by assigning costs to the supplies. The girls then learn about optical illusions and try to create their own (Activity 9 of Science Discovery badge).
  • Chromatography / Chemical Appearing Act - Girls use chromatography to see what colors compose the ink in various pens using coffee filters and water. For Chemical Appearing Act, the girls paint a picture using a starch solution and then paint over it using an iodine/alcohol solution to see the chemical reaction that causes their picture to appear (Activity 1 of Science Discovery badge).
  • pH Test / Chemicals - Girls learn about the pH scale, learn what it means if something is an acid or a base, and then use cabbage juice to test if items found around the house are acidic or basic.  Then they check labels of household products to see what types of chemicals are inside, their dangers, and what to do if improperly used (Activities 7 and 8 in Making it Matter badge).
  • Reverse Engineering / Simple Machines - Girls take apart a small appliance to learn how it works. Also, they learn about the six types of simple machines and discuss examples in their lives (Activity 9 of Making it Matter badge/Activity 10 Science Sleuth badge).
  • Polymers - Girls create a polymer using glue and borax and experiment mixing in various substances and recording the effects (Activities 1 and 2 of Making it Matter badge).
  • Doorbells - Girls create a circuit using wires, a battery, and a doorbell to make the doorbell work and learn how/why it works. Background on electricity. (Activity 3 Making it Matter).
  • Recycle Paper - Girls follow a procedure on how to blend old paper in blenders and strain it to create new paper they can take home.  Discuss Discovering Technology: Activity 8 and Science Sleuth: Activity 2
