Volunteer Spotlight: Karin S.

Karin S.

What do you find most surprising about your experience working on Engineers Week?
I continue to be amazed every year by the anticipation of the troop leaders. Shortly after we finish an event, we start getting inquiries about the next year’s program.

What’s the most rewarding part?
It has to be the excitement of the scouts and the appreciation not only from them, but from the troop leaders and parents as well.  We typically host more than 300 Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Webelos, so it’s a fun day for the scouts and our volunteers.

What did you find most challenging?
Trying to make sure we get as many scouts signed up and participating as the limits of our facilities allow.

What’s been the most important lesson?
The kids want to learn, and if you provide the forum for that, they will come!

Anything else you’d like to add?
Without the annual participation in Engineers Week by our approximately 80 volunteers, we couldn’t make this happen. Between work and home, every one of them is very busy, but they still manage to invest many hours of their own time to make this event a fun learning experience for the scouts. This to me is a great example of the Bechtel culture.
