U.S. Market for LNG is Heating Up

Following a burst of late-1970s market optimism, three terminals to import liquefied natural gas opened in the continental United States: in 1978 at Cove Point, Maryland, and Elba Island, Georgia, and at Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1982. The first two closed within two years; the third, shortly after it opened. The demand just wasn’t there. That left only one U.S. regasification terminal, the Everett, Massachusetts plant that had opened in 1971 (and continues to operate today).

In the past few years, however, demand for energy has been rising rapidly, and all three closed facilities have been recommissioned and subsequently expanded.

Cheniere Energy, Inc. was one of the first to foresee the rising demand for LNG. The company currently has four receiving terminals under development: the Sabine Pass project in Cameron Parish, Louisiana; the Creole Trail project, also in Cameron Parish; and projects near Freeport and Corpus Christi, Texas.
