Gus is a technical specialist with expertise in chemical process design in the petroleum and environmental cleanup fields. He has more than 50 years with Bechtel, holds five patents and has authored more than 18 technical papers.

What is the most exciting or challenging project you were involved in, and what was your role?
The most challenging project was the Russian Chemical Weapons Destruction program from 1995 to 1996. I was project manager for the Comprehensive Implementation Plan Study and for the Joint Evaluation Support Contract
What is the best career advice that you've received?
Regularly—weekly or monthly—take the time to review the key objectives, constraints, tasks, deliverables, alternatives, etc., that are your responsibility Confirm that appropriate plans, staffing, organization, and controls are in place to meet those objectives.
What do you see as the key skills that new engineers need to have in the global job market?
Written and oral communication skills, critical thinking ability, a systematic approach to resolution of issues, and awareness of the personal needs of your colleagues. Plus, of course, sound engineering skills.
What leadership skills do you think are needed to be a great engineer?
In addition to the skills above, the ability to prioritize activities within the structure of a task, project, or functional department and commitment to act on those priorities.
