It takes extraordinary planning and resources to put on the Olympic Games. That’s a big reason that Bechtel has been called on to help prepare for five Olympics. The company has provided management and other services to Olympic organizing committees for the 1984 summer games in Los Angeles, the 1992 summer games in Barcelona, Spain, the 1996 summer games in Atlanta, Georgia, the 1998 winter games in Nagano, Japan, and the 2002 winter games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
An international leader in engineering and construction, Bechtel is perfectly suited to meet the challenges involved in designing and building Olympic villages, sports venues, media centers, and other facilities. By combining global reach with a local touch, Bechtel delivers Olympic projects on time and within budget, helping ensure success of the games and a proud legacy for the host city.
- For the Los Angeles games, Bechtel managed the entire project. It involved more than 60 locations in the Los Angeles area, including 23 venues, 14 training centers, and three Olympic villages.
- For Barcelona, Bechtel managed design and construction of facilities to house 15,000 athletes and 2,000 media representatives. For its effort, the city awarded the company the Barcelona ‘92 medal.
- For Atlanta, Bechtel helped transform the Georgia Technical campus to accommodate 15,000 athletes, and designed and built temporary facilities including food service locations and offices for the U.S. Olympic Committee.
- For Nagano, work included construction of the media center and design and construction services for a 430,000 square-foot (40,000 square-meter) operations center.
- For Salt Lake City, Bechtel provided a detailed overall budget and helped plan schedules and manage costs. In addition, the company performed management services for design and construction of venues, with a focus on security issues.
