    Bechtel Named Employer of the Year in Queensland, Australia

    Bechtel has won the 2013 Employer of the Year Award in the annual Queensland Training Awards. The awards are given by the Queensland Department of Education, Training, and Employment and recognize people and companies for excellence in vocational education and training. Bechtel was honored for employee training and community development programs at the three liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects the company is building on Curtis Island in Queensland.

    Bechtel Built Iconic Solar Project Produces First Power to Grid

    The Unit 1 station of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating Station was synced to the power grid for the first time, representing a major milestone for the project. Located in California’s Mojave Desert, Ivanpah is the world’s largest solar thermal plant, spanning 3,500 acres of public land. Once commercially operational, the 377 megawatt (net) plant will generate enough electricity to power 140,000 homes annually.

    Bechtel Team Granted Agreement to Build Advanced Laser System in Czech Republic

    Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC, a team led by Bechtel and the University of California, has been granted an agreement worth more than $45 million to develop and deliver a state-of-the-art laser system for the European Union’s Extreme Light Infrastructure facility in Dolní Břežany, near Prague in the Czech Republic. The High Repetition Rate Advanced Petawatt Laser System marks a major enhancement over current laser systems and will enable unprecedented research in areas as diverse as medical imaging, particle acceleration, homeland security, and quantum physics.

    Bechtel Unveils Innovative Port Design to Meet Shipping Challenges in Africa

    Bechtel, the global engineering, construction, and project management company, has created a revolutionary design for ports that could transform shipping in Africa. The Multi-User Offshore Hub is designed for two or more users and consists of an offshore, smart terminal arrangement and docking system that can accommodate oceangoing vessels and barges. The Multi-User Offshore Hub has the potential to open new market opportunities for African ports by significantly increasing capacity and substantially reducing port construction and operation costs.

    Small Modular Reactor Project Gets Additional Funding

    The U.S. Energy Department allocated an additional $20.5 million to support a new project to design, license, and help commercialize small modular reactors (SMR) in the United States. The award will support a project led by Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Bechtel.

    Bechtel Completes Utility-scale Photovoltaic Solar Power Project

    Bechtel announced today that the company has completed construction of the Catalina Solar Photovoltaic Generating Facility. The company designed the 110-megawatt alternating-current solar plant located in Southern California’s Kern County. The facility will produce enough clean energy to power some 35,000 homes.

    Bechtel and Junior Achievement ® Partner for Entrepreneurship Program in Gabon

    Bechtel is expanding its international partnership with Junior Achievement® (JA) to include a major new entrepreneurship skills training program in Gabon. The training program will teach important business education skills to some 300 young Gabonese in its first year and provide opportunities for Bechtel staff to serve as volunteers and mentors alongside their JA counterparts. The initiative builds on Bechtel’s ongoing work with the Government of Gabon to develop and implement the National Infrastructure Master Plan and support the Gabon Emergent strategy.

    Los Alamos Lab Once Again Breaks Record for Shipping Radioactive Waste

    Bechtel announced today that Los Alamos National Laboratory set a new annual transuranic (TRU) waste shipping record. With three months remaining in the 2013 fiscal year, the Los Alamos TRU Waste Program has already shipped 1,074 cubic meters of the radioactively contaminated waste, topping last year’s laboratory record of 916 cubic meters.

    Bechtel Completes Major Power Transmission Project in Canada

    Bechtel announced today the company has completed the Hanna Region Transmission Development (HRTD) project on schedule and under budget. The project to expand and upgrade ATCO Electric’s electrical transmission system and infrastructure in Alberta included stringing 219 miles (353 kilometers) of 240 kilovolt (kV) and 144 kV transmission lines, constructing more than 1,200 new transmission towers, and building six new substations and upgrading twelve substations.
