Cleaner Power Now Being Generated for up to 778,000 Homes in Northern Virginia

Bechtel, a global leader in engineering, procurement, and construction, has completed the state-of-the-art Stonewall Energy Facility in Loudoun County, VA, USA for Panda Power Funds ahead of schedule. The client took over commercial operation of the 778-megawatt combined-cycle generating station last week. The cleaner, natural gas-fired power plant will now supply electricity to up to 778,000 homes. This is the fourth facility that Bechtel has built for Panda Power Funds.

“Stonewall has been delivered to our customer early and safely, and is now generating cleaner power to communities in the United States," said Craig Albert, president of Bechtel’s global infrastructure business. "I’d like to thank Panda Power Funds for their ongoing support and thank our team, which has delivered this high quality and highly-competitive plant ahead of schedule.”

Bechtel provided project management, engineering, procurement, construction, and startup services, while its consortium partner, Siemens, was responsible for core power elements, including the natural gas and steam turbines, generators, and waste-heat-recovery boilers.

“We have been working with Bechtel for years and they continue to deliver value for us,” said Todd Carter, president and senior partner of Panda Power Funds. “This state-of-the-art facility is one of the cleanest power plants in the United States and is already providing power for one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation.”

The new facility uses advanced emissions-control technology and is cooled with treated wastewater, helping to conserve Virginia’s natural supply of drinking water and preventing discharge of nutrients into the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay watershed.

More than 700 jobs were created during the construction of Stonewall and a further 27 long-term jobs have been created to operate the power plant.  The facility is expected to generate approximately $20 million a year in direct and indirect spending in Loudoun County, increase the tax base and provide additional revenue to the town of Leesburg.

Bechtel has successfully completed combined-cycle projects in the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Brazil, Taiwan, Egypt, India, Turkey and Mexico.
