Bechtel Principal Counsel Honored with Women of Achievement Award

Bechtel’s principal counsel, corporate secretary and manager of the corporate legal team, Mary Quazzo, has been honored with a 2015 Women of Achievement award by Legal Momentum, the Women’s Legal Defense and Education Fund (USA). Legal Momentum leads action for the legal rights of women through education and advocacy. The award recognizes women who have achieved distinction in the legal, business, and public services professions.

“Mary is an inspirational leader with a career spanning more than 25 years at Bechtel,” said Carol Robles-Román, President and CEO of Legal Momentum. “Her remarkable career, expertise and attitude exemplify Legal Momentum’s goals for women’s advancement.”

Quazzo joined Bechtel in 1989, initially responsible for project development and financing services, as well as management of the company’s ownership interests in development projects.  She went on to serve in various leadership roles across Bechtel. She is currently responsible for corporate legal matters and governance and advises on corporate architecture, capital and organizational structure, financial and ownership matters and strategic alliances.  She also serves as secretary to the Bechtel Group Board and its audit committee. Quazzo is a member of several groups committed to improving diversity, including: the Minority Corporate Counsel Association; DirectWomen, an organization that works to increase the representation of women on corporate boards; and Women@Bechtel, a collaborative forum connecting employees globally to promote the development and advancement of women at all levels.

The Legal Momentum award is the latest accolade for Bechtel’s legal team. Nancy Higgins, chief ethics and compliance officer, was recently awarded the Carol R. Marshall Award for Innovation in Corporate Ethics by the Ethics Resource Center. The award recognizes a chief ethics and compliance officer for innovation and leadership in building or enhancing a corporate ethics and compliance program. Bechtel’s corporate legal team also won the Team of the Year award in the Engineering and Construction category of the 2014 Legal 500 (USA). The award recognizes the team’s adept handling of complex regulatory and legal issues surrounding Bechtel’s engineering and construction projects around the world.

“Our in-house lawyers are leaders in their specialist fields,” said Michael Bailey, Bechtel’s General Counsel, who heads up Bechtel’s global legal team. “We’re honored that Mary and Nancy have been recognized for their professional knowledge and expertise.”
