Bechtel Projects Win 12 R&D 100 Awards

LOS ALAMOS, California - August 9, 2010
Research teams at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and the Y-12 Nuclear Security Complex are among the recipients of this year’s R&D 100 Awards. Bechtel is on the teams that manage and operate these laboratories and sites.

The R&D 100 Awards, widely recognized as the "Oscars of Innovation," identifies and celebrates the top high-technology products of the year. Sophisticated testing equipment, innovative new materials, chemistry breakthroughs, biomedical products, consumer items, and high-energy physics: the R&D 100 Awards spans industry, academia, and government-sponsored research.

LLNL received six R&D awards this year for innovations that could provide assistance in homeland security, help improve sight for people, boost fusion energy research, and reap major improvements in water purification technology.

LANL researchers were recognized with five awards for achievements that include developing a safer, "greener" explosive chemical; using extreme slow motion moviemaking to allow scientists to study the physical properties of materials; as well as harvesting and extracting biofuel from algae.

A team of researchers at Y-12 was honored for developing an innovative solution to a common machining problem. Using computer modeling and simulation, the group developed a technology to break up into smaller pieces the tangle of long metal shavings that come from machining operations. The technology is now in routine use on some machine tools at Y-12, resulting in safer and cleaner operations and improved quality.

LANL and LLNL are managed and operated by a partnership led by Bechtel and the University of California. Y-12 is managed and operated by a partnership led by B&W Technical Services and Bechtel
