NORWAY  Bechtel has finished a three-year project to build the Mosjøen carbon plant for Alcoa, Inc., and Elkem ASA. The facility will supply anodes to the companies’ aluminum smelters in Norway and Iceland.

The plant is the largest of its kind, built on a site reclaimed from a fjord just south of the Arctic Circle. The project encompassed materials handling systems, a paste plant, scrap recycling and fume treatment equipment, and three natural gas-fired bake furnaces. The plant will produce 310,000 tons (281,000 tonnes) of anodes annually.

Nuclear Plant Award

USA  The Tennessee Valley Authority has awarded Bechtel a contract to complete its Watts Bar Unit 2 nuclear generating plant near Spring City, Tennessee. Construction of the 1,180-megawatt facility was placed on hold in 1988 due to a reduction in forecasted power demand. Unit 2, now about 60 percent complete, will be finished by 2012. Prior to this award, Bechtel completed the restart of all three units at TVA’s Browns Ferry nuclear plant and performed steam generator replacements for Sequoyah Unit 1 and Watts Bar Unit 1.

Rail Expansion Completed

UK  Tube Lines has completed an expansion of the London Underground’s Piccadilly Line to include a new terminal at Heathrow Airport. The 2½-year-long project, completed on budget and on schedule, expands a loop that carries passengers between terminals. Tube Lines is a consortium of Bechtel and Amey that has a 30-year contract to oversee maintenance and upgrade of three Underground lines.

Crude Oil Pipeline

CANADA  TransCanada Keystone Pipeline has awarded Bechtel a four-year contract covering engineering management, procurement, and construction management for a 2,148-mile (3,457-kilometer) crude oil pipeline from Alberta to the U.S. Midwest. By late 2010, the Keystone pipeline will transport about 590,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta, Canada, to major crude oil hubs in Illinois and Oklahoma.

Texas Employer of the Year

USA  The Texas Workforce Commission has named Bechtel subsidiary Becon Construction Company its 2007 Texas Employer of the Year. The commission cited Becon’s extensive cooperation with the agency in staffing the Sabine Pass LNG terminal project in Louisiana, and the company’s workforce development effort in preparation for the Motiva refinery expansion near Port Arthur, Texas, as reasons for selecting the company.

Safety Training Award

USA   Brandon Hall Research has presented Bechtel with its Custom Content Gold Award for an online training course called “Driving Safety Challenge.” The course coaches employees in safe driving, on and off the job, by leading them on a hazard-filled virtual trip to and from work. Brandon Hall Research advises organizations on e-learning techniques.
