CLOSER
Hope for Horses
Texans, by tradition, revere horses. So it’s no surprise that the state is home to a nonprofit ranch that offers sanctuary to horses rescued from abuse and neglect. Habitat for Horses combines affection and veterinary care for its wards with education on their humane treatment, horsemanship training, and an adoption program for rehabilitated animals.
Employees from Bechtel’s Houston office recently devoted a month of weekends to help improve the organization’s facilities near Hitchcock, Texas. They brought their toolboxes and talents to the site, and helped other volunteers quickly build a feed and tack room—long needed on a ranch that’s home to 50 horses. They also installed lighting throughout the ranch, from pastures to paddocks.
