Retrofits can be capital intensive, which is why engagement along with detailed studies and analysis are crucial to understanding what modifications or upgrades make the most sense. This massive project included the retrofit of seven power units at the W.H. Sammis Plant in Stratton, Ohio. Bechtel handled design, procurement, installation, and startup of three sulfur dioxide scrubbers, which are the main components of a flue gas desulfurization system designed to remove more than 95 percent of the sulfur dioxide from emissions at all seven units. The project also reduced emissions of nitrogen oxide by at least 64 percent.
