Urban Development

Delivering large-scale urban development projects

For decades, we have helped customers bring such ambitious concepts to life, including large-scale urban development projects ranging from free-trade zones to entire cities that include the design and development of roads and infrastructure, utilities, communications, and residential areas.

In order to deliver projects of such magnitude successfully, Bechtel combines smart planning, resilient design, technical know-how and an integrated approach to make visions become a reality -- and that they are engineered for the next 100 years.  As a lead partner of the Smart Cities Council, Bechtel is sharing the benefits of this experience and its knowledge of planning, financing and sustainable solutions, with cities around the world.  We are also working with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and others to discuss the importance of resilient infrastructure for long-term prosperity.

We are living in a revolutionary time. What we are seeing on an engineering level today is much bigger than the change that happened when computers were introduced in our industry.

Bechtel’s Amos Avidan talks about the dramatic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions on the Crossrail project during construction through changes in our work processes.

Smart Cities as a Hub for Innovation

New technologies offer part of the solution e.g. predictive tools to anticipate weather patterns, advanced metering to pinpoint outages in real time etc. Quality of infrastructure is also increasingly important—needs to be durable for multiple decades. Bechtel is a charter member of the Smart Cities Council, a for-profit, partner-led association for the advancement of the smart city business sector.

Bechtel and CSIS launched a global sustainability series The Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) and Bechtel launched a year-long series on global sustainability. CSIS is a leading voice in Washington, D.C., and the wider international affairs community on the important and growing role of the private sector in promoting sustainable development.
