Nuclear Security Operations

Extensive experience managing and operating complex nuclear facilities, from nuclear research and development sites to U.S. nuclear manufacturing facilities

Bechtel and our project partners employ thousands of employees, execute billions of dollars in capital infrastructure and improvement projects, and secure the facilities of some of the nation’s most sensitive missions.

Featured projects

Uranium Processing Facility, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA

Bechtel is a majority partner of Consolidated Nuclear Security, the team building the Uranium Processing Facility at the Y-12 National Security Complex. The design and construction is subcontracted to Bechtel’s U.S. government services company and will be a multi-building, state of the art complex for enriched uranium operations related to nuclear security.

Y-12 National Security Complex, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA

Bechtel leads the team that manages and operates the Y-12 National Security Complex, one of the key U.S. manufacturing plants for maintaining the nation's stockpile of nuclear weapons, ensuring a safe and effective nuclear weapons deterrent. The site retrieves and stores nuclear materials and fuels the nation's naval reactors, as well as performs research and development for the government and the private sector.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, California, USA

Bechtel, in partnership with the University of California, manages and operates Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. One of the premier national laboratories, Livermore focuses on nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship, technology development in support of national security, high-performance computer simulation, and materials and energy research.

Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA

Since 2006, Bechtel has worked in partnership with the University of California to manage and operate Los Alamos National Laboratory, a premier U.S. facility for national security and scientific research, and one of the world's largest multidisciplinary institutions. The team has more than 7,000 employees on the 36 square-mile Department of Energy-owned property. The Los Alamos lab site includes more than 2,000 individual facilities, including 47 technical areas with 8 million square-feet under roof.

Pantex Plant, Amarillo, Texas, USA

Bechtel leads the team that manages and operates the Pantex Plant, the nation's only assembly and disassembly and integrated explosives manufacturing facility supporting the nuclear weapons stockpile. Personnel at the site—about 18,000 acres (7,300 hectares)—dismantle and dispose of retired weapons systems and monitor and maintain active weapons systems in the U.S. nuclear stockpile.
