More than 300 Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, and Webelos became engineers for a day during the 18th annual Engineering, Science, and Technology Day at Bechtel’s Houston office.
The event was part of Bechtel's involvement in Engineers Week (February 19-25, 2012).
The young people participated in interactive demonstrations led by Bechtel volunteers that showcased the various types and elements of engineering. The activities included building a cart propelled by a balloon; designing and building a Play-Doh playground; building water treatment systems using empty soda bottles, rocks, pebbles, and a coffee filter; conducting chemistry experiments; and workshops focused on computers, electricity and nuclear science.
Employees will also take part in Discover E, an Engineers Week program in which professional engineers hold "teach-ins" at K-through-12 schools around the country. Former CEO Steve Bechtel, Jr., helped create Discover E more than 20 years ago.
