Bechtel Engineering Day

Boy Scouts

Boy Scouts at Engineering DayWho can attend

Bechtel Engineering Day is for Boy Scouts who have an interest in science and engineering. Although Bechtel doesn't charge a fee for attending these classes, many hours are invested by our volunteer team to make this event happen. Although we understand that emergencies happen, we ask that each scout that registers remain committed to this event.

NOTE: There is a new requirement this year for the Boy Scout merit badge classes. There must be one responsible adult (Scout master or parent) that remains on Bechtel premises during the event in case of an emergency for each troop registered. This person should have the authority for your troop's scouts in case of any emergency, medical or otherwise. Please plan accordingly when registering your troops and make arrangements for a responsible adult to remain for duration of your troops classes.

Suggestions for Scout Leaders

The BSA Merit Badge program is a wonderful opportunity for Scouts to learn about different subjects and professions, and to possibly become interested in a subject which may later develop into a career. Bechtel’s program consists of the Scout doing "pre-work" and submitting certain requirements for registration, followed by the Counselor taking care of the rest of the requirements with the Scouts on class day.  It is recommended (but not mandatory) that a troop leader or parent (who has expertise in the given area), work with the Scouts to give them added preparation for the relevant merit badge class. It's just an added advantage for the Scout to be able to learn more about the subject, and it's good for the younger Scouts to have someone check with to make sure that they are submitting the proper pre-work.

Also please have your blue cards completely filled out (all required entries). In previous years, we lost a lot of time waiting for the Scouts to write down their names, addresses, and other information, while others were waiting for the next class to start.

Thank you for your interest. We are trying to make this program a successful one, and look forward to you helping us and the Scouts accomplish this. We enjoy doing this each year, and look forward to seeing you in February. Happy Scouting!

How to register

  1. You must first review the pre-work requirements for the class/classes that you are interested in and be committed to completing the required pre-work and turning it in on time to Bechtel
  2. If you are committed to completing the pre-work (by February 3, 2016), you must then get your Scout master or assistant Scout master to submit registrations through our new electronic registration system. Please note that NO early registrations will be accepted.  Registration for this event will begin on January 4, 2017 at 7:00 a.m.  (Note: Registration requests can no longer be accepted at any Bechtel e-mail address.)
  3. Once classes are full, any remaining registration requests will be placed on a waiting list for that class. If you have to drop out of a class for any reason, the next scout on the waiting list will be contacted to see if he is still interested in attending. We will continue with this process until the empty spot has been filled.

After you register

Once the initial registration is complete, you should receive an automatic confirmation of the classes, and waitlists, in which your scouts have been registered. After you receive that email confirming you have been registered, you are safe to buy the book and begin the pre-work.

Pre-work

All pre-work that you are required to complete for each class that you are registered in must be turned in no later than February 3, 2016. If your pre-work isn’t turned in, your spot may be released to the next scout that wanted to attend. The pre-work, whether an electronic file or a scanned version of a hard copy, should be attached to an email and sent to the corresponding email address for classes that you are taking.

Please note

We have encountered numerous issues in the past with faxed pre-work, which is why we are requiring the pre-work to be emailed directly to the counselor who will lead the class.
