Recruitment and Selection

Diversity is pivotal to the success of our business, so we have a broad selection criteria in place. We want people from every walk of life to consider working for us.

You’ll need to have or be on course for obtaining a 2:1 degree classification or overseas equivalent. You should also have some relevant work experience – either in engineering or construction – and a basic understanding of how our industry operates.

We’re also looking for well-rounded individuals, so we look for more than just academic excellence. We actively look for graduates who have taken on positions of responsibility, have challenged themselves and can show they can really rise to the occasion when it matters. Examples can include; university societies/clubs, university/local sports teams, volunteering or charity work and even experience with organisations such as STEMNET, Engineers Without Borders and a like.

Selection process

We have invested in our new selection process with our candidates in mind and we hope you find this process both engaging and informative.  We have a simple 5-step process which is outlined below and it will help us find out more about you and what you have to offer.

Step 1: Online Application

We accept CVs for all our applications however, be sure that you include all your basic information and try and keep it to two pages or less. You may also wish to include a cover letter but it’s not necessary. Check out our tips and advice for CV information. We advise that you only apply for one position or the positions which you able to be considered for based on your degree discipline, this information will be in each of our vacancies.

Step 2: Situational Strengths Test

We want all of our candidates to take a sneak peek into what life at Bechtel may be like, this is a global assessment and have taken a view from what our international candidates may experience in their locations. We hope that it gives you an idea of some typical situations you find yourselves in and we will find out how you might respond across the range of decisions. You will be asked to rank order your responses, based on what you are most likely to do. There is no need to prepare and no formal experience will give you an advantage, just answer honestly so we can get a good idea of what you’re like. You might even find after the assessment that this isn’t the place for you and that’s OK.

Step 3: CV Screening

Here we want to take closer look into your qualifications, degree and work experience and how these match up to the position you have applied for. If you tick all the boxes, then we will progress you to the next stage. You may also be rejected at this stage if you:

  • Don’t have the relevant degree for the position you are applying for
  • Suitable work experience

Step 4: Digital Interview

We often are unable to see as many of our candidates with a traditional face to face interview or even a telephone interview, as we would like. However, our new process lets us invite and review a larger selection of candidates, giving you a better chance to move through the selection process. You will be invited to on demand interview where you will be asked a series of questions and given some time to respond. Don’t be alarmed there is plenty of time to prepare and practice before hand.

If you are successful at this stage, we will progress you to the next stage.

Step 5: Hiring Manager Interview/Review

This is an opportunity to show off your technical skills, capabilities and motivation to join Bechtel. You can expect questions about your work experience and degree qualification(s).  We are not here to catch you out, but to understand your level of technical knowledge, and how you might apply this to real life working situations. You can also expect some traditional competency based questions as well as scenario based questions.

This is the final stage of our process and we will aim to provide feedback to our candidates at this stage should you be unsuccessful.
